Students of the Uta Berger’s 2018 Summer School in Agent-based Modeling–Cara Gallagher, Magda Chudzinska, Angela Larsen-Gray, Christopher Pollock, Sarah Sells, and Patrick White–just published practical guidance on pattern-oriented modeling (POM) in ecology.

They discuss where in the ecological hierarchy can we find patterns; what kinds of patterns are useful; how should simulations and observations be compared; and when in the modelling cycle are patterns used. The paper is in Biological Reviews at doi: 10.1111/brv.12729.
